As a math curriculum writer and a former primary school teacher, I am interested in the mechanisms underlying effective learning as well as individual differences in learning and competencies in math. Using behavioral and neuroimaging methods, I explore the following: How does a rule-based system of numerical symbols develop from isolated meaningless written characters? What are the conditions under which specific learning strategies are optimal, and why?
